Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) primed with valproate (VPA) and/or lithium increased microvessel density in the ischemic brain regions after transplantation. In the ischemic frontal cortex (A) and striatum (B), microvessel density increased when middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rats were transplanted with VPA-primed and/or lithium-primed MSC, and this effect of VPA or lithium was largely suppressed by AMD3100 and GM6001, respectively, as determined by immuno-histochemistry.
