FIGURE 8. — A diagram of interactions among Ran, RanBP1 and Plk1. In interphase (G2), Ran and RanBP1 are localized in nucleus and cytoplasm, respectively. According to entry into mitosis, in which Plk1 is phosphorylated and activated, Ran and RanBP1 interact weakly in the cytoplasm. When interaction between Ran and Plk1 occurs, RanBP1 can be phosphorylated by Plk1, and the Ran-RanBP1 complex will be stable. RanBP1 phosphorylation and stable interaction between Ran and RanBP1 are important for microtubule nucleation and spindle maturation.
