Inverse correlation between anti-HERV T cell responses and HIV-1 plasma viral load, and absolute CD4+ T cell count (cells/μl). PBMC from 42 vertically HIV-1-infected subjects on combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) were analyzed by ELISPOT assay for HERV responses. The total sum and average of HERV responses (>50 SFU/106 PBMC and two times higher background) had a significant inverse correlation with the HIV-1 plasma viral load.
