Criteria for severe malaria (after Hien et al)[1]

On admission:
1. Cerebral malaria. GCS < 11.
2. Shock. Systolic blood pressure <80 mmHg, with cool extremities
3. Severe anaemia. Haematocrit <20%, with parasite count > 100,000/μl
4. Liver disease. Total bilirubin > 42 μmol/L with parasite count > 100,000/μl
5. Hyperparasitaemia. Peripheral parasite count >10%
6. Acidosis. Venous bicarbonate <15 mmol/L
On admission, or developing within the first 72 hours:
7. Hypoglycaemia. Blood glucose <2.2 mmol/L
8. Convulsions
9. Pulmonary oedema
10. Renal failure. Plasma creatinine > 265 μmol/L
