Mean pressure–volume data (±s.e.m., N=4) for inflation and deflation of an excised lung of a harbor porpoise (IFAW10-049). Volume includes the estimated MAV and was normalized as a proportion of the estimated total lung capacity (TLCest) (Kooyman and Sinnett, 1979), and pressure is pressure at the airway opening (Pao), which in excised lungs is the transpulmonary pressure. Error bars show the s.e.m., indicating the reproducibility between repeated inflation–deflation cycles.
