Catalytic nanoparticles do not promote cytolysis. Cytolysis was quantified using fluorescence by measuring the release of calcein into the supernatant (Invitrogen) using excitation at 494 nm and emission at 517 nm. Cerium oxide and platinum nanoparticles were incubated with cells at the concentrations indicated for 3 hr at 37°C. No significant cytolysis could be observed. (n=3)
