The wild type and strains ΔhmgX and hmgXc were cultivated in AMM with or without addition of tyrosine. Protein crude extracts were used in enzyme assays to determine specific activity of tyrosine aminotransferase (A) and homogentisate dioxygenase (B). Mean values and standard deviations were calculated from three independent experiments. Significance was calculated by a Student's t-test and an asterisk indicates P values<0.05.
