Three of the actin bundles indicated by the arrows are shown at higher magnification below. Notice that the dots which are actin filaments cut in cross section are hexagonally packed, albeit with a few gaps in the packing. Similar gaps are seen in the wild-type bristles. (b) Longitudinal section through an actin bundle. The lines at the margin of the micrograph indicate 12-nm striations, which demonstrate the presence of fascin.
