The a-c fusion protein supports growth by oxidative phosphorylation, but the a-c/2-c does not. The OM202recA strains expressing wild type subunits a and c (pBWU13), or the a-c and a-c/2-c fusion proteins with (pHP7, pHP808) or without (pHP2, pBROD6) wild type subunit c were plated on succinate agar plates. Growth after 24 h at 37 °C is shown. The a (orange) and c (helix I, blue; helix II, green) polypeptides expressed in the respective strains are shown next to the corresponding sectors of the plate.
