Figure 2

Immunostaining for GM2 ganglioside in 3-week and 8-week old Slc9a6−/− (female) mice. (A) At 3 weeks of age, prominent accumulation of GM2 ganglioside was observed in the anterior part of the basolateral amygdala. (B) At higher magnification, dense vesicular labelling occurred in individual neuronal cell bodies. (C) Immunoreactivity in the amygdala in an age-matched wild-type mouse from the same litter is near absent. (D and E) Accumulation of GM2 ganglioside was also seen in neurons of the CA3 and CA4 regions of the hippocampus of a Slc9a6−/− mouse at 8 weeks of age, as well as in the cell bodies of neurons in the dentate gyrus. (F and G) No GM2 immunoreactivity was found in these same regions of the hippocampus in an aged-matched wild-type mouse. Scale bars: A = 500 µm; B and C = 25 µm; D and F = 200 µm; E and G = 40 µm.
