Spiral ganglion cell counts declined steadily with age from a mean of 33,679 in the first decade, to 22,444 in the tenth decade. Each point represents an estimate of the total number of spiral ganglion cells in one ear. Solid line represents the best-fit straight line. Each ear is coded according to the histopathological conditions noted for that case: only normal ears or those with signs of strial atrophy or chronic otitis media (OM) were included.
