The steps were generated with a pressure probe after which P was held constant by removing or injecting cell solution (P clamp). The temperature was 23°C. The cell in B was 12 mm long and growing at 0.0116 μm s⁻¹ before P was changed. The cell in D was 21 mm long and not growing (mature). L is shown as the length beyond L_o at the beginning of the trace.
