Circularity, surface areas and grey levels were calculated from the longitudinal cross-section of the shoot apex from a 10-year-old plant, using the ImageJ program in conjunction with the images in Fig. S1 (Supplementary Data, available online). Values are mean ± s.d. (n = 30 cells per zone). A circularity value of 1 corresponds to a perfect circle. As the value approaches 0, it indicates an increasingly elongated polygon. Grey levels correspond to means of grey levels in cell or nuclei (0, black; 255, white).
