Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation (* P < 0.05 versus ventilator-induced lung injury [VILI]/N2). Acute lung injury was scored in each sample (n = 6 for each group) according to the following four items: alveolar congestion, hemorrhage, infiltration or aggregation of neutrophils in airspace or the vessel wall, and thickness of the alveolar wall/hyaline membrane formation. Each item was graded according to a 5-point scale: 0, minimal (little) damage; 1, mild damage; 2, moderate damage; 3, severe damage; and 4, maximal damage.
