The free energy landscape for the HIV-1 dimer at room temperature. Two stable structures (I, II) coexist in the HIV-1 dimer. Structure I corresponds to the extended-duplex dimer, and II corresponds to the kissing-loop dimer. Two different types of species (Mal and Type-f) (A and B, respectively) have the similar energy landscape profile. In the energy landscape, N and NN are the numbers of the native and non-native base pairs, respectively.
