Alignment of the N-terminal domain protein sequences from plant, fungal, and algal NRs. Sequences were first aligned using the PileUp program (Genetics Computer Group), and the resulting alignment was refined by hand. Sequences are all from the SwissProt database, the algal NR sequence (niavolca) is from V. carterii, and the fungal NR sequence (niaustma) is from U. maydis. Conserved residues are boxed. Acidic residues are shaded dark gray, and basic residues are shaded light gray. The 56-amino acid sequence deleted in the ΔNR protein is indicated (dashed box), as are the sequences deleted in the ΔA-NR and ΔS-NR proteins (bold boxes).
