(e) Cells were then gated onto CD8⁺ or CD4⁺ cells, which were then gated further according to (f) expression of CD45RO and CD27. (g) CD45RO^hiCD27^hi cells (central memory cells, TCM), CD45RO ^hiCD27^low cells (effector memory cells, TEM) and CD45RO ^lowCD27^low cells (effector cells, TEff) were then gated onto interferon-γ (IFN-γ), or interleukin-2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), perforin and macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α) as shown.
