Initial cell density was set at cells/mL. In the basic model, cell density was constant and was a spike lasting the minimum interval of iteration ( minutes) as an approximation to zero variance. In the column, was the same as in the basic model, but cells increased in density at rate per min. In the column, the function was rectangular, spanning 2.85 minutes on each side of the mean so that the variance in lysis time was min; cell density was constant. As a check of the simulation for the basic and models, fitness estimates were found to be indistinguishable from those in eqns (2) and (7) for their respective cases. In the simulations, densities were updated every minute.
