Initial cell density was set at Inline graphic cells/mL. In the basic model, cell density was constant and Inline graphic was a spike lasting the minimum interval of iteration (Inline graphic minutes) as an approximation to zero variance. In the Inline graphic column, Inline graphic was the same as in the basic model, but cells increased in density at rate Inline graphic per min. In the Inline graphic column, the Inline graphic function was rectangular, spanning Inline graphic2.85 minutes on each side of the mean so that the variance in lysis time was Inline graphic minInline graphic; cell density was constant. As a check of the simulation for the basic and Inline graphic models, fitness estimates were found to be indistinguishable from those in eqns (2) and (7) for their respective cases. In the simulations, densities were updated every Inline graphic minute.
