Snapshots of ophiuroid locomotion described as the ‘breast stroke method’. The five arms are functionally divided into the following three types: one ‘leading arm’ that surges forwards is used for exploration of the direction of movement (non-rhythmic); two ‘side arms’ are mainly used for performing locomotion (rhythmic); two ‘posterior arms’ are passive, and they do not contribute to locomotion (non-rhythmic).
