Perforation occurs for moduli greater than 3.0 GPa (circles, displacement control) and 3.3 GPa (triangles, force control). (b) Plot of the depth of cavity against number of iterations to perforation with normal material properties (E=2.6 GPa). If the cavity resorbed by osteoclasts is greater than 32 μm then perforation is inevitable.
