^aCells of wild-type strain 972 and ain1-Δ1 strain JW45 were fixed and stained with bisBenzimide at various times after shifting exponentially growing cells from YES medium at 30°C to EMM + 1 M KCl medium at 18°C. At least 300 cells were scored for each time point. Note that some ain1-Δ1 cells appeared to die and lyse with 2-4 nuclei, and death and lysis were extensive among cells with eight nuclei.
