A guide to the phage display of membrane proteins. As demonstrated here, peripheral membrane proteins can require the negatively charged surface of wild-type, KO7 helper phage. Monotopic membrane proteins benefit from the zwitterionic surface of KO7+ helper phage. Unlike the requirements of peripheral and monotopic membrane proteins, β-barrels can be displayed through packaging with either helper phage.
