Expression of the nap-β operon as measured by β-galactosidase activity in various R. sphaeroides strains and under various conditions. The prrA, fnrL, and napnap-β strains are mutants of strain 2.4.3 in which these genes have been inactivated. Strains 2.4.1 and 2.4.9 are wild-type strains of R. sphaeroides. Black bars represent aerobic conditions, white bars represent microoxic conditions, and gray bars represent microoxic conditions supplemented with 10 mM nitrate.
