The alignment tensor is highly sensitive to the conformation of the protein. The preferential orientations of a protein with respect an alignment medium, especially in electrostatic cases, can vary significantly within the conformational ensemble of the protein. Such dependence is illustrated here by considering two conformations within the RNase A reference ensemble that have very different alignment tensors in the presence of Pf1 (shown in surface representation on the left).
