New model for parasite driven modifications to the host cytoskeleton during parasite egress. We propose that parasite egress begins as early as 35 hpi with the loss of spectrin and actin adaptors, and lead to the formation of large holes in the cytoskeleton mesh, followed by large-scale calpain-mediated proteolysis of the remaining cytoskeleton at 48 hpi to eventually release merozoites.
