The mitotic cycle and the endocycle.

Schematic representation of the two basic cell cycles. In the mitotic cycle, newborn cells pass through G1, S and G2 before dividing and producing two daughter cells. In the endocycle, the M phase does not occur and cells undergo a doubling of its nuclear DNA content in each endocycle. This is frequently associated with an increase in cell mass.
