A “gedanken” experiment showing resolution as a function of box length. For a perfectly ordered ideal helical specimen (dotted line) the resolution will improve as the box becomes longer, due to the fact that there will be less alignment error the longer the box. For most real specimens (solid curve) there is an optimal box length that can only be found empirically.
