Photoreceptor death is caused mainly by apoptosis after retinal detachment (left bar). Caspase inhibition by Z-VAD decreases apoptosis but promotes RIP kinase-mediated necrosis (middle bar). Blockade of both caspases and RIP kinases is required for effective prevention of photoreceptor loss (right bar).
