The uptake process as an open enzymatic reaction. ΦD represents the flow of nutrient ions arriving at the cell membrane. When one of the local nutrient ions, S0, encounters one of the free immobilized transporters, Ef, it is incorporated into the cytoplasm (Si). The number of uptake sites changes with time due to the “flow” of new produced transporters, ΦE.
