The fungal infection process was examined and compared between plants grown under a normal light cycle and those under complete darkness post inoculation. At 48 HPI, the pathogen successfully penetrated through the epidermal cell layer and started infection of mesophyll cells in the CS leaves that were grown under a normal light cycle (A), but not in the leaves that were grown in the dark (B).
