Advantages of low-molecular-weight heparin over unfractionated heparin

  • Greater bioavailability

  • Predictability and dose-dependent plasma level

  • Less risk of bleeding

  • Lower incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

  • Lower risk of heparin-induced osteoporosis

  • No need for laboratory monitoring

  • Can be safely administered in outpatient

  • Duration of anticoagulant effect is longer, permitting once- or twice-daily administration
