Schematization of the border detection procedure: (a) after initialization of one point inside the LV cavity, the algorithm based on the region-based image noise distribution iterates expanding the cavity position; (b) a second step algorithm, based on curvature-based motion, is then applied to regularize the contour and thus include papillary muscles and ventricular trabeculations inside the LV cavity, thus producing the final position of the endocardial contour; (c) the Malladi–Sethian model for active contour evolution is then applied starting from the detected endocardium (in red) in order to determine the epicardial position (in white).
