RP-1 and AA-RP-1 display therapeutic efficacy against established visceral leishmaniasis in mice. BALB/c mice infected with L. infantum chagasi for 1 week were therapeutically administered sterile PBS, RP-1, or AA-RP-1 for an additional 2 weeks, every other day. Total DNA was then isolated from livers (A) and spleens (B), and quantitative PCR was performed to determine the amount of parasites/organ.
