CPS inhibits nitric oxide production by macrophages. J774 macrophages were incubated with heat-killed S. suis WT or its nonencapsulated mutant strain (CPS) for 1 h, 6 h, and 24 h. Nitric oxide production was detected by incubation with DAF-FM (green). Macrophages interacting with S. suis WT show a delayed and reduced nitric oxide response compared to that of cells incubated with the CPS mutant.
