Negative and positive ions of lipid A detected by ESI-MS. (A) Shown is the negative-ion spectrum of P. gingivalis lipid A, as demonstrated by ESI-MS. This analysis revealed a substantially different mass spectrum compared with MALDI-MS shown in Fig. 2A. (B) Shown is the positive-ion mass spectrum of lipid A obtained by ESI-MS. The lipid A positive ions are depicted as average ion masses and are consistent with the monoisotopic masses generated with MALDI-MS shown in Fig. 2B.
