Schematics of (A) a tissue core harvested from medial meniscus at the tibial surface and (B) experimental setup of the compression test. Semi-cylindrical tissue cores were sandwiched between two glass slides and deformation profile as indicated by fluorescently labeled cell nuclei were recorded after each stress-relaxation step. The darker regions in the cross-sectional image demonstrate the extensive, interconnected secondary network surrounding the circumferential collagen fibers (lighter regions) in meniscal tissue.
