Quantitative signal enhancement using Gd-DTPA. Each mouse (n = 5 per group) was scanned before (v0) and after (v1) an i.p. bolus injection of the Gd-DTPA contrast agent. The percentage was calculated from the ratio of signal enhancement using the equation [v1−v0]/v0. The signal enhancement within the ROI can be correlated to the breakdown of the BBB. All the regions of the brain had greater enhancement of the signal within the ROI in the PBS-treated mice than in the normal mice (no EAE induced) and PLP-BPI treated mice. The cerebellum was the only region in which there was a statistically significant difference between groups. Normal control and PLP-BPI-treated mice had a significantly lower signal enhancement within the ROI of the cerebellum (p < 0.05).
