The figure is based on the origin of the specimens listed (Karling 1968; den Hartog 1989; Maier et al. 2000; Schnepf et al. 2000, and the references therein), although the distribution of some of the species is likely to be much wider. For (a), grey shades indicate the distribution of Tetramyxa parasitica. M=Maullina ectocarpi, A Phagomyxa algarum, B=Phagomyxa bellerochae, O=Phagomyxa odontellae. For (b), dark grey=Plasmodiophora bicaudata, dotted light grey=Plasmodiophora diplanthere.
