Cartoon illustrating microbubble surface architecture design for in vivo perfusion imaging studies. The PEG chain length was estimated by self-consistent field (SCF) theory (Lai and Zhulina 1992) using values of 0.44 nm2 for the average projected area per lipid molecule (Hollinshead, Harvey 2009) and 0.35 nm for PEG monomer length. The lipid monolayer thickness was estimated to be ~3 nm based on the persistence length of the stearoyl chains (Israelachvili 1992).
