On micropatterns, cells develop elevated intra- and intercellular tension when the intercellular junction is in contact with ECM (Left) and reduced tension when it is far from ECM (Right). In situ, as shown here in the case of tubulogenesis, this mechanism would promote the relocalization of junctions away from ECM and the formation of multilayered structures of opposed polarities.
