An unrooted phylogenetic tree based on ClustalW alignment of real and predicted teneurin amino acid sequences suggests that teneurins-1 and -4 share a common ancestor, as do teneurins-2 and -3. The stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus has five teneurins, but unlike Danio rerio it has retained two teneurin-3 paralogs.
