Figure 2

Phylogenetic placement of the endosymbionts of nycteribiid bat flies Penicillidia jenynsii and Nycteribia allotopa in the Gammaproteobacteria on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. A neighbor-joining tree inferred from a total of 973 aligned nucleotide sites is shown, whereas maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses produced substantially the same results. Bootstrap values no less than 50% are indicated at the nodes in the order of neighbor-joining/maximum parsimony/maximum likelihood, whereas asterisks indicate support values less than 50%. Sequence accession numbers and AT contents of the nucleotide sequences are in brackets and parentheses, respectively. As for insect symbionts, the information of the host insect may also be indicated in parentheses. P-symbiont, primary symbiont of prevalent infection and obligatory nature; S-symbiont, secondary symbiont of sporadic infection and facultative nature.
