(A) Illustration of the retina. The optic nerve is formed by the fibres of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) which exit the retina at the optic disc. The nerve fibres of the RNFL originate from the ganglion cells in the ganglion cell layer. (B) Cirrus HD-OCT B-scan. A false colour scheme is shown, which is generated by the differences between the retinal layers in tissue reflectivity. Please note that the reflectivity of the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner plexiform layer (IPL) are very similar, which makes these layers almost indistinguishable from one another.
