Statistical analysis: P-values comparing the indicated groups of isolates were determined by repeated measures two-way ANOVA with matching by time-points. Data were missing from time-point ‘day 7’ and needed to be excluded from statistical analysis. The complete dataset of average relative gene expression levels (± SD) measured during 8 consecutive days in vitro promastigote growth can be found in dataset S1.
