Axonal damage, as visualized by SMI32+ axons in the white matter, correlates with inflammatory foci but not with atypical EAE. Cerebella and spinal cords isolated on day 21 pi were analyzed for axonal damage by immunoreactivity for SMI32 antibody. SMI32+ axons were detectable in the white matter only within or around inflammatory foci. SMI32 immunoreactivity was less intense in cerebella and spinal cords of IFNγRCNSKO (A-D) compared to IFNγRperiKO (E-H). Space bar = 50 μm.
