Each experimental plant was the severed top of an individual seedling; seedlings arose from two maternal lines. Note tissue removed for sodium and potassium measurement appears as a notch in the stem. The plastic collar wrapped around the base was installed for easy removal of the stem from the sand prior to breaking down the experiment.
