NPC-mediated mRNA export. mRNA docks (~80 msec), translocates (>20 msec) and releases (~80 msec) in a three-step kinetic process across the NPC. The grey bars indicate the binding site distribution of exporting mRNA along the NPC axis and are combined with the turnover rates shown in Figure 1. The roles of individual nucleoporins on nuclear and cytoplasmic processes away from the NPC add to in a multiscale space and time topography of NPC function. Addition of more data on import cargoes, genetic mutants and disease related transport defects will open a new view on many subcellular processes in the future.
