The simulation uses the network architecture shown in Figure 1. Each dot represents an item from one of two categories, denoted by separate colors and its location. Category structure is enhanced when labels, activated by the network, are allowed to feed back onto the perceptual layer (A). When this feedback of labels is disrupted by blocking the flow of activity from the label to the hidden layer, representations revert to reflecting the perceptual structure of the stimulus space (B).
