Virulence gene expression is tightly regulated by environmental stimuli. The presence of the plant phenolic acetosyringone (AS) strongly promoted expression of the virB promoter in pTi+ cells (15955 pSW209Ω) when both carbon (p < 0.05) and nitrogen (p < 0.05) is limiting under acidic, low-phosphate conditions.
