Common themes from concurrent sessions on what needs to be done to effect antimicrobial stewardship in food animal production

Need for sustained uniform monitoring of antimicrobial use and resistance. Regulatory issues relative to: Importation and use of non-approved product (OUI and API); MUMS product availability; extra-label drug use; availability of alternative products; and prescription only status. Need for prudent use and clinical use guidelines. Communications among industry players to develop a culture around awareness of antimicrobial resistance issues. Need for leadership and ownership of antimicrobial resistance within the industry.
